How does tms work?
At Central Berkshire Psychiatric, we use the MagVita system by MagVenture. A probe or "coil" is held securely near the front left part of your head. This is over the area known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. A series of magnetic pulses are produced by the coil that penetrate into underlying brain tissue and lead to the discharge of nerve cells. This, in turn, causes a release of chemicals, called neurotransmitters, between the nerve cells. By repeating this process thousands of times, the parts of our brains linked to mood begin to change the way they function and that leads to improvement in symptoms.
