TMS has been shown in multiple trials to be an effective treatment for unipolar depression. That is, depressive illness in the absence of a history of manic or hypomanic episodes also known as bipolar depression. There is also promising research in using TMS for anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, addictions, and autism. At this time, though, treatment of unipolar depression in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode is the only FDA approved use of this treatment.
A recent study presented at the 2016 meeting of the American Psychiatric Association that looked at the effects of TMS administered in a private practice setting showed that 76.4 % of the 123 patients in the study showed response to treatment, defined as a reduction of symptoms by at least 50%. 72.4% of patients met criteria for full remission of the depressive episode for which they were being treated.
